Course development funds to prepare undergraduates to participate in faculty research projects

Monkey and papaya_resized side-by-sid-layout_552px.jpgTo expand undergraduate research opportunities, CLACS' Title VI NRC grant will support the development by MSU faculty of semester-long independent study courses to prepare students to participate in mentored research on faculty projects in Latin America or the Caribbean. The faculty member will receive summer funding of $1500 to develop the independent study course, which will be offered during the following academic year.

The course should provide context and methods training to prepare one or more undergraduates to conduct summer research under the supervision of the MSU faculty member or one of their international research partners. Once the research preparation independent study course has been developed, the faculty member is expected to continue to offer this opportunity to undergraduate students in subsequent years.

To apply, submit a brief proposal with the following information:

  •  description and location of the research project into which the student will be incorporated
  •  name/position of the scholar who will supervise the student researcher in the field
  •  brief overview of the contextual and methodological content that will be incorporated in the preparatory course
  •  brief plan for how you will recruit a student or students to pursue research.

Send submissions to Laurie Medina (medina(at)msu.edu). Deadline: March 1
