Mass squatting in informal settlements and housing has been a common feature of urbanization in the modern era. Its ubiquity and nature, however, tend to be poorly understood, not recognized as part of the dynamic ways in which the urban poor seek shelter, home, and recognition in hostile and precarious urban environments. This roundtable discussion brings together a host of scholars working in different world regions to explore the policing of squatting and informal settlements, including homelessness in the United States.
